Philippians 2:1-18
Fear, trembling and the only hope
We experience fear and a trembling heart whenever we are emotionally invested in something, yet uncertain of the outcome, even more so when there is little or only one source of hope. Under an atheistic worldview there is no hope of complete justice; many wrongs can go unpunished and victims unavenged. At the core of every person is the purest hope; that we want the best for all of man. To fear for this one hope is an appropriate reaction. It is the most important to us and so we are called to eagerly work it out with fear. To ‘work out our salvation with fear and trembling’ (v12) is our godly response to this world.
Hebrews 12:5-13
In this fear and work, God can discipline us. His fatherly love settles our fears, and we find comfort as we grow in obedience and walk the path. We also are fulfilled in our natural longing to please our Father. Allow this work of God’s discipline and our obedience to make us more and more righteous, rather than becoming passive and sitting comfortably in our blessings – continue to work out your salvation, just as you did at the beginning. Have you forgotten this mind-set that you had at first?
Hebrews 1:13-14
We are given help from the angels, and do not need to be timid especially as we pursue to help those who are calling out to us for help. Who around you is calling for help, for their ‘only hope’? Do you hear and listen to those calling for help? The world’s only hope is the Lord; a self-sacrificial God. We must introduce this God to the world around us, because they do not know Him and only He can meet the needs and deep desires of humanity.
Continued Obedience
What is the call to obey? It is in the words of Christ; to believe, repent and follow him. ‘To live is Christ’. It is also to love unconditionally those around us and the Lord. But be careful to not fall in love with the world and its things. 1 John 2:15
Matthew 22:34-39
This is the correct pursuit of love. To love God first and then our neighbours, which is to share and seek out the Gospel and reach out in love to the lost.
2 Timothy 2:1
It is essential that we maintain the true value in our walk with God, Him being our only hope and way to salvation. We must not lose this priority to work hard at our salvation in awe and reverence for Him, and our continued obedience will make our one and only hope sure!
