Message Summary & Reflection
The sermon today is based on chapter 4 of the book of Ephesians.
The introduction was a short summary of the first 3 chapters of this book, rich in doctrine, encouraging and inspiring us and teaching us about the principles of our faith, how Jesus paid the price for our redemption on the cross so we could be adopted sons and daughters of God through Jesus. The chapters teach us extensively about the grace of God the Father, the love and redemption and the workings of the Spirit.
The letter to the Ephesians changes its tone to the application as we head into chapter 4. We are no longer just talking about these concepts we are now applying them as our knowledge should result in action. Doctrine and application – you can not have one without the other.
So this is how we are called to respond:
To strive for unity and maturity in the body of Christ. The grace of God is what should fuel us. When we are focused on encouraging, helping, equipping, loving each other we give each other space to grow. We all have a purpose in the body of Christ. Do you know what your purpose is? Is it in line with what is good for the body?
We are all called to equip each other and to be equipped ourselves. Do you see others needs? Are you allowing biblical input into your life? Are you becoming increasingly mature in Christ?
What is your work in the body? If you are not using the talents God has given you for the body you will let both yourself and the church down. The Christian life is a journey and we are on this amazing journey together. Ask yourself how you are doing in growing in unity and maturity in the body. We are all needed.
As we are called to a new life our expectation should be that of insistence. We cannot compromise and if our fuel is the love of God, we want to make sure we live a life worthy of the calling. Are there parts of your life that you haven’t quite given over to God? It is easy to harden our hearts if we don’t watch out. We can easily desensitise ourselves to sin and thus slipping in our calling. We need each other to keep each other holy. This can only happen through openness, through vulnerability and honesty, in being real with each other and get the encouragement we need. If you are not open you will miss out, not just from unity but also from letting other people love you and for you to feel the grace of God, the very thing that we all need in our lives.
We are the body – the glory of God when we are unified and grow together. It is an incredible blessing to be in a place where we all belong, where we can journey together, grow and mature and with a purpose reaching all the way into eternity
