Message Summary & Reflection
This sermon focused on the first miracle of Jesus in John 2.
In this story, we read how Jesus, his disciples, and his mother, Mary, were guests at a wedding in Cana. Partway during the wedding the wine ran out, something which would have brought disgrace upon the host families. Mary turned to Jesus for help, who responded by asking the servants to fill the waterpots with water. Jesus turned the water in the water pots into wine, and not just any wine, but the best wine.
Rubik focused on three things we can learn from Mary in this story.
The first thing is that we need to persevere. In this story, we see Mary turn directly to Jesus when she heard that the wine had run out at the wedding. She didn’t know how Jesus would solve the problem, but she had faith that he would. Trials and difficulties are a guaranteed part of life. When we face trials, who or what do we turn to? Do we panic and do things our own way, or do we turn to Jesus? It’s important that we persevere through our trials so that we can become mature (James 1:2-4, Hebrews 10:36).
The second thing we can learn from Mary is that we need to trust in Jesus, and Jesus alone. Like the previous point said, Mary, trusted Jesus even though she didn’t know how he would solve the problem. When Jesus did solve the problem, he solved it in a generous way. He provided plenty of wine, and it was good wine. This teaches us that we need to trust God, even when we don’t know how he will deal with the obstacles in our life, and he will provide plenty (Proverbs 3:5-7).
The third point Rubik made was that there is a purpose in everything. When we go through difficult times in life, it reveals our hearts and whether our faith in God is genuine. Rubik ended by challenging us to be open with our weaknesses with one another so that we can help each other remain committed to loving God.
