Message Summary & Reflection
We are continuing our series in “Boasting in the Lord” and looking into 1 Corinthians, to learn about what church should be and how we should do church. 1 Corinthians was written because there were issues in the church, issues Paul wanted to address.
1 Corinthians 1:18-31 “Boasting in God’s power and Wisdom”
Everything is about the cross and it seems like a strange message as Jesus is the only one of all world religions who came to save people and die. Are we looking for signs? Will we only believe if we have no doubt? You have to try it to find out. We need to put it into practice to see if it is from God. When we interact with the cross, we will gain righteousness. Christ crucified is our holiness, and Christ crucified is our redemption.
But it can be hard to accept. We need to humble ourselves in order to listen to the message and accept it. God will use the simple things to change this city.
We don’t need to boast about ourselves; we need to boast about God and what he has done and continues to do for us.
1 Corinthians 1:10-17 “Boasting in Human Wisdom and Eloquence
The church in Corinth was talented and it grew very fast. They had a lot to boast about. They had great leaders in the church. But the Christians started to lean on their own and the world’s wisdom. They had lost their focus on Christ crucified and started to get divided over the leaders and who to follow. They started to follow their “favourite church celebrity”. They saw it as a way to validate their worthiness of view and position. We can gravitate in doing the same. But we are called to follow the leader’s faith, not just follow them.
But there was a 4th faction and they were religious in their approach. They would only follow Christ, but without any input or openness from brothers and sisters. Refusing deep open relationships is prideful and arrogant toward God. “I don’t need man, I only follow Christ” is arrogant. If this is your mindset, how well are you doing spiritually.
Chloe wrote to Paul to ask for help, which prompted this letter. Chloe was willing to ask for help when needed. And Paul didn’t take the glory. Everything is focused on Christ crucified.
We are called to be different and to preach Christ crucified.
If we only acquire knowledge but don’t use it we are fooling ourselves. It is all about Christ being our righteousness, holiness and redemption.
Are we falling for human wisdom and emptying the cross of Christ of its power? Or are you willing to look a fool to the world by participating in the power of God?
