Over the last couple of weeks, the Hope Youth Corps has been serving different communities around Glasgow.  Young people from as far away as Denmark, Sweden and USA came together with others from England and Scotland to spend two weeks together in Glasgow to help serve communities in need.  They have achieved much in the short time they were in Glasgow.  On the southside of Glasgow, they helped clean up a public park and in the north of Glasgow they joined the Love Milton project for a week.

Love Milton is a community charity set up to improve an area of north west Glasgow which was savaged by drug abuse in the 1980s.  In recent WP_20160623_14_36_18_Proyears, the area has improved a great deal, but the long term effects of the recent past are still felt.  The Hope Youth Corps helped the Love Milton volunteers make a different different across parts of Milton.  The Love Milton team were very grateful to have the Hope Youth Corps help them for a few days and celebrated all that had been achieved on the last day with pizza cooked in their outdoor pizza oven.

As well as serving the community, the Hope Youth Corps was also involved in out reach with the Glasgow Church of Christ and hosted a couple of Bible discussions in cafes along Byres Road in the West End of Glasgow.  A big part Hope Youth Corps is building relationships and they really excelled in this area.  Strong relationships were forged with the workers and volunteers of Love Milton, the members and families of the Glasgow Church of Christ and most importantly with each other, most of whom didn’t know each other until they got off the plane in Glasgow.

The group also spent a weekend in Edinburgh, visiting the Edinburgh International Church of Christ.  Stay in the homes of the families there and leading the worship at their Sunday church service.

The Group were lead by Andy and Tammy Fleming (Birmingham) and supported by Paolo and Cara Ugolini (Glasgow), Jack Legon (London) and Naomi Rowden (Birmingham).

Serving with LoveMilton also taught the HYC participants about building roots in a community and making an impact from seasoned community workers in Glasgow.  The participants were also deeply moved by the warmth, generosity and openness of all the people they met throughout Scotland along the way.  It was a “give-and-get” experience, and everyone involved certainly felt like they got something special from the time, even as they sought to give.

They came to change the world and in a small way, that is exactly what they did.  They helped change the southside and Milton in Glasgow by their serving.  They encouraged and built relationships with local volunteers.  They built relationships with the members of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Churches of Christ, inspiring their families, teens and pre-teens and most importantly built lifetime long relationships and memories with each other.
